Please Sir, Can I Have More?

Johann Rupert is the man currently being linked to another Premiership takeover with Blackburn. Their fans are being quoted saying that they would love a takeover to boost the clubs finances to match those challenging for the champions league. However, 15 Premiership clubs have been taken over within the past 5 years, giving those clubs extra money to do what? Challenge for the Champions League places of course.

Eventually all Premiership clubs will have been taken over and promised money to spend, which the new owners cough up immediately. But with the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle and West Ham being taken over and the likes of Birmingham and Arsenal in talks with mega rich people, one can only think that even after these new takeovers take place and all the clubs are itching to spend their new found millions, that all the clubs find themselves in exactly the same place as before. Simply because all the other clubs around them have improved their spending power as well. Where a team spending £25m in a season would normally find themselves sitting top of the most spent league, may find themselves lying in 7th or 8th this season due to the fact that there have been so many takeovers and so much money pumped into the game in such little time.

Will we ever see the likes of one team standing above all the rest in terms of complete dominance in the transfer market just like Chelsea? My gut feeling is no we wont, as there are a lot more teams receiving a lot more money and the gap is closing due to every takeover, but we still cant expect 15 teams fighting for European places which is what new owners always try to promise.

i have to agree with you for a change hope the amount of takeovers happening is amazing but obviously you have ur abramovichs and then ur ex thai prime ministers so there is still a bit of difference in the amount of money each club will have, i.e ashley is rumoured to have 4 billion and this new blackburn takeover apparently have 1.5billion so there will be a bit of difference but these ppl wont be putting that much investment in so we could see a gridlock in the top 8 premiership teams but u will still have ur man utds chelsea and possibly liverpool at the top as they have more money and already have top players whereas arsenal are a good team and need to rebuild, we all know blackburn and newcastle need to rebuild i.e newcastles defence, west ham are trying to rebuild their team this season but could all be in vain anyway if they get relegated and can u see parker etc staying there then or another takeover happening when they see how much money the "egg" could lose if they do go down???
i think this could ruin football a bit but when not if the first club to get relegated who has had a takeover happens and does a leeds then we could see a car boot sale for all the premiership clubs.....lets hope not but its possible

thats why im saying that even with all of these takeovers it isnt going to make much difference so therefore man utd chelsea etc will still be up there

Do we think Football is killing other sports??? discuss.

i know i may be out on a limb here but the sport we all know and love could be actually killing other sports. now this is only my opinion but when u look at it you may have a think a bit. how many top 10 footballers in the world can u name??.....probably a few. but when it comes to other sports i.e tennis u could prob name federer murray and nadal but who else could u name, same with golf after tiger woods who could u name whos really good at that sport? yes there will be some ppl who will bve able to name these sportsman but if u went to a school i bet if u asked the kids the same questions they would be able to name the footballers more or less straight away but could struggle with tennis players, golfers and snooker players etc.
the whole takeover thing in football is another example that it is the main sport (america excluded cos they have rubbish sports) in the world where we have investment. Yes u have formula one with loads of money in it but football is getting the investment now and we could well see other sports feeling the effect?? agree or disagree??

the only problem i have with that is that there isnt an English League in golf or tennis and to be fair if we asked this question maybe 20 years ago we would see more people telling you footballers names than tennis players. The reason why we dont see/hear as much is because the papers and tv control what we read, see and hear. So if more people turn to tennis as a sport then you will notice the papers talking about it. ie who will be on the back pages during Wimbledon when everyone likes to tune in? Murray

Anonymous said...

i agree with you but that will not challenge football in the popularity stakes even when england won the ashes 2 years ago the country went cricket mad so the media went cricket mad- yes cricket is still a big sport in this country but is it as big as it was ? my feeling is no and no other sport came closer than overtaking football than when we won the ashes- the same thing will happen if murray won wimbledon then the public and the media will love tennis for a bit but when the football season starts again ppl will forget about it and only care about football when the us open comes around or something

Drew Hope said...

because the media then turns its attention to football.

Sky sports news should really be called Football news- with a tiny bit of other stuff. Theres alot of people out there that have their fragile little minds warped by what they see on t.v

i dont think anything will come close to overtaking football but really the main reason is that its the best sport in the world. So why should we have to put up with rubbish sports?

haha good point but not everyones good at football and not everyone likes it- god knows why they dont like it but there are some. and howay jims not exactly good at football is he so he needs other sports to learn......

In Britain the main sport is football, your right at saying not everyone is good at football but Sky have 4 channels that can show any sport around the World and they do, maybe your just looking out for football and not seeing the bigger picture?

Are you out of your mind? they wont allow being gay as a sport, do you seem them allowing that in the Olympics? No simply because Jim would dominate the gold medal for years, followed closely by Rich. Before anyone says that i entered but never won a medal, i can tell you i really didnt.

Anonymous said...

"gay olympics"?? im sure there may be already a gay olympics but if we need to know we shall just ask jim cos he prob did that rather than try to get in the army
whereas rich may have a medal as you say but im not sure
and u say u dont have a medal as u never entered well ill believe you ......this time

it seems to me that the back pages of the newspapers only ever feature football in fact the last time any other sport made the back page splash without any football on there at all was the ashes 2005, ill alomost guarantee it will stay that way this summer even though wimbledon is starting and regardless of how well murray does i think it will stay the same and yes this is the media portraying it but the public have a say in it too. without any matches being played this summer football will dominate the back pages and we have to ask ourselves why? ive often said how brilliant this sport is throughout this season and that its the most complete sport...because it has everything ..controversy(tevez saga) happiness (man utd fans winning league will testify this one) sadness (sheff utd) violence (turkey or just lee bowyer) skill (ronaldinho and henry) and occasionally a good game breaks out liverpool 4-3 newcastle rings a bell unfortunately.
and now weve reached the stage where managers of the football clubs(mourinho fergie) are bigger than the sportsmen who are playing the game adding a whole new dimension to the real -life soap opera football has become.
but the main reason other sports may face extinction is that football has truly become a global game, as i understand it everywhere u go in japan there are 100ft high posters of footballers that tower over you and its the same in china and most of asia and a lot of africa depending where u go just look at how big the african nations cup is now. its now almost impossible to go anywhere in the world and not be able to see live premiership or european football on tv (hope u know this when u went to oz) but u really cant say that about other sports , and with beckham going to LA and his circus following him then you never know but amrica may even take the sport to their hearts and become a world force in the game but that may not happen for a time to come yet.
What other sports could claim to be as close in terms of global popularity as football??? golf, tennis probably the closest but they are not on the same scale as the beautiful game , even though football is brilliant the worrying thing about it eclipsing other sports is whether we'll see more and more going the way of the dodo and slowly becoming extinct, if u think back ten years most ppl knew the names of the 100m world record holder or olympic champion with stars like linford christie etc but athletics seems to be petering out now with household names few and far between, even though london has the 2012 olympics who will we know will be competing in it but more importantly will we care who is competing by then if athletics keeps going the way it is, im sure it used to be easier to name top ten golfers or tennis players back then and i would put that down to footballs saturation of the sporting world, if other sports want to survive this football dominated world then theyd better invest money and time in to promoting their stars and sport , plus the stars have to be ready to enter the media circus and realise that there much more to it than just competing in their chosen sport, just look at footballers today they are like pop stars or as i already said soap opera stars. this is not about personal opinion or attacking football because i love football i just think that there is a worring truth to the sports world and the its football dominated.

i thank you

You've hit the nail on the head right there. The media half cater for demand - so they print footy cos most of us love it - and half print what they think is "juicy", so any story of a great sporting rivalry (Jose and Wenger, Jose & Benitez, Zidane & Materazzi...) will be back page news for days on end. It's what most of the country like, and it's interesting.

So regardless of how many people like cricket, tennis, golf, snooker - until it gets exciting (in the media's eyes anyway, and this equals slagging matches and controversy) then it won't get printed.

I bet if u went to some schools and asked a proper big tennis fan if they knew footballers they would probably name most of the big named players like Beckham etc. Football matches are played every week so ofcourse the papers are gonna write about them more, go back to the tennis thing they only have 4 major events in 1 year wimbledon, australian open, US open and the French open and during that time sky sports news talk about that all the time and when cricket is on skysports talks about that especially now with the 20/20 season starting again, even on skysports at the min you have got americas cup sailing. I have to say ive seen Bramble play better than Doug and if they did have gay olympics doug wud win the gold medal in everything.

Anonymous said...

is there any point in replying to your views jimmy! u will just sit on the fence or go with whoevers getting the most support at that particular moment- gay olympics??? u already got the super gold medal as hope said- i think they realised that no body even got close to rivalling you to gayness so they gave you the silver and bronze medal- fucking hell they wud even give you the wooden spoon!

anyway back to football and the debate ahem (jims gay)

to say titus bramble is better than any one else in the world is a false statement for starters!
yes skysports talk about the other sports and yes the america cup for sailing has even got some mention now but do many ppl care about it i doubt it- im sure they tuned in the other night to watch who won that bit of the race rather than thierry henry going to barcelona because thats not news is it!
i see your point but football will always come up with a story like that and when it does not many ppl will be bothered about other sports- they will then say i cant wait for the new season to start to see how my team is going to do- toon fans do it all the time and then we say maybes next year,
anyway more so about ur point that football matches are played every week so it will be in papers- well its the off season at the minute and there hasnt been any football in a bit apart from some football at the under 21's championship, my point will be though that when its the cricket or tennis off season u wont hear many ppl saying i cant wait for the next tennis season or cricket season as the football season is in full swing, but when its off season for football we want the next season back straight away

news flash DOUGS OLYMPICS IS THE GAY OLYPICS.
i go with the most support u liked jimmy white until he wasnt good then u went to mark williams bet ur new favourite is john higgins coz hes the champ. u went with barca soon as they won la liga before that u wanted a real shirt and as for me going with the most popular, i read the 1st thing u said then commented on it without reading any body elses views. i know loads of football fans who cant wait for the 20/20 to start so ur just talking shite again and u say just before the ashes that u cant wait for them and bet your looking forward to rugby world cup and then ull support whoever wins it.

Anonymous said...

ur ma!
i will defend the barca thing til i die- always liked them but the toons still for me
and jimmy white was always shite but if u remember i supported mark williams b4 he got to the final

jimmy said...

i remember that u supported jimmy white then when he went out u supported the best player

Rich Prince said...

Now now chaps - no need to fight. Why can't we just agree?

From what I understand - Doug won the gay olympics by loving Mark Williams and Football is the most popular sport in the world easy, so gets most media coverage.

Surely no-one can argue with that?

Anonymous said...

i can!
FACT- jim won the gay olympics! i evidence!
